Leadership Lifeline - The Fear Itself

The Fear Itself by Jeanne Gladden, Leadership Coach, Educator and Co-Founder

“The Only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”  Franklin D. Roosevelt

So many things we don’t know now that we were pretty certain of a month ago…two weeks ago… or last week end, perhaps. Our sense of certainty is evaporating moment by moment, meeting by meeting, event by event, gathering by gathering, as our calendars clear themselves off and our retirement accounts drain themselves down.

We shift to virtual mode, Zooming from this meeting to that. We give ourselves little pep talks as the certainty drains right out of us dehydrating and disorienting us.

As humans, we crave certainty.  When we don’t know facts or the truth, we tend to make things up to fill the vacuum. We plug into our favorite channels or news sources to get our “fact fix,” only to discover the facts were mere myths. Not because anyone set out to intentionally deceive us…but it’s that certainty is no longer certain.

We don’t know about any New Deal, or if there will even be one. We do know that we are experiencing a major pandemic and facing a global economic crisis.  We do know that we are being asked to do our part by staying put. We can certainly include these three statements into the category of what we do know.

Stay with us, as we ride out this season of uncertainty together.

We are not your source for a clinical response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

We are your source for leading yourself and others through these troubled times, while coping with The Fear Itself. We are your source for creating your own New Deal.  We are your Leadership Lifeline.
