Leading By Feel

Human beings are amazingly complex.  Each of us has unique talents and skills.  No one human being is exactly like the other as we are made up of our genetics and the accumulation of our daily experiences. Achieving superior performance includes dimensions such as education, intelligence, motivators, acumen, personal skills, and style.  In addition, Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is a foundational quality or dimension that can impact our ability to use our skills or talents to be effective in different situations.

Emotional Intelligence is the ability to sense, understand, and effectively apply the power of emotions to facilitate higher levels of collaboration and productivity.

The EQ research indicates that our IQ “is what it is” (unable to be changed) but EQ on the other hand can be improved upon and in fact requires continuous work for mastery. Dan Goleman, an EQ researcher posited that “90% of the difference between star performers and average performers in the workplace is related to EQ”.

The more we understand about ourselves the more successful we can be.  Through our work at The Quality Coach® (TQC), our coaches work side by side with many leaders or aspiring leaders in various industries including manufacturing, health care, retail, finance, construction, not for profit, and education.  Across the industries we experience those who continuously work on mastering their EQ dimensions as more highly successful in facing the ever-changing scenarios in the workforce.

A common misunderstanding around Emotional Intelligence is that we must take emotions out of the workplace.  Impossible!  And this is not at all true for achieving a high level of EQ.  On the contrary EQ includes sensing, understanding, and regulating so that leaders may have more influence and make better decisions.  And here we are back to humans as complex beings.  As humans we are made to feel, and we are made to have emotions.  As human leaders we carefully navigate through sensing, understanding, and regulating… in other words Leading by Feel.

We believe so much in the impact of the Emotional Intelligence in leadership that three of our coaches recently became certified in EQ from TTI Insights.  You will see more from TQC in 2023 on this topic as we will be incorporating this work into our Leadership Development Program 2.0 as well as offering a stand-alone session in February of 2023.   You may find more information here.

Oh, and let us not forget that EQ development is extremely helpful in our personal lives as well. The holidays are a good example of a time when tensions can run high and family situations often trigger our emotions.  Tools for sensing, understanding, and regulating emotions will not only come in handy but make for an improved holiday season for all.

And lastly, whether you have personal or professional EQ interest (or both) here are two resources for reading that we recommend; 1. How Full Is Your Bucket by Tom Rath and 2. Primal Leadership by Daniel Goleman.

Wishing you Happy Holidays and a wonderful

Emotional Intelligence Journey in 2023!
